The world of dragons

I have been looking at the Chapters book site for children and found a book that ties into the movie clip of "How to  Train a Dragon" posted on this blog. It looks like something you might enjoy and it looks like it might be on sale. For our silent reading in class each day, this might be a book you would really enjoy!
Dragon Rider

Remember about our tradition of celebrating a birthday in the classroom and the donation of a book to our class library, this might be one that would be suitable.

Happy reading and don't forget to make time for reading time between parents and children.

Paddle the Don

Hey students - check out the information I have put at the bottom of my blog about the canoe paddle up the Don River. I have family who are doing it and I am going to the shores of Lake Ontario where the paddle ends to show my support. My sister and two nieces are raising money to keep the Don River clean for fish and river life. If you want to make a contribution or come to the banks of the Don to cheer the paddlers on, it is on May 1st from 10am - noon.
Let's do our part to keep the effects of humans on habitats to a minimum so future generations can enjoy the Don as we do today.

Making a graph using the CANADA FOOD GUIDE

Next week we are going to do some work on graphs in math. One of the expectations in the math curriculum is to conduct a survey and then display the data in a graph. Your homework assignment is to do a survey of the eating habits in your home. We have been talking in class about the Canada Food Guide and what foods constitute a good diet. I am going to ask each student to keep track of what foods are eaten in the home for a week.
I have attached a food guide serving tracking sheet that you can print off and use to track your daily meals.
Print it off and starting on Monday May 2nd for 1 week, I will ask you to keep track. After we have finished our survey, we will create a class graph of food habits and see how each household did using the Canada Food guidelines. I have attached a link about graphs, that you can have a look at - it will be a review for you, as we have already covered graphs in February - you will be using this site in the next month to create some other graphs that you will be doing for Social Studies.
Parents, some of the students may need help printing off the tracking sheet, so I would ask if you could assist. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.

My Food Guide
Here are some fun math games to try......go to this link and you can try a variety of games that will test your know how and you can have fun at the same time! Try the games section - I had fun with the racing car game.
Click on the word math games and it will take you to a great website. Try doing some of the games with your parents, sister or brother, relatives or some friends.
Don't forget to do your homework if you have any first and then try this.

Look at this real volcano in action

Students and parents - have a look at this video of an active volcano in Hawaii - it feels like you are standing beside the volcano without the heat it produces.
In class, we are going to try to build our own volcanoes, so if you would like to volunteer to help us out with this activity, it will be on May 24th at 1pm. If you are interested, please email me.
I would like to also ask for donations of old newspapers - to be used to make our paper mache volcanoes.
Thank you, Miss Williams

Are you a rock star?

No, this is not about music! Our next unit of study is going to be looking at rocks and minerals and in preparation for the visit of the Rockhounds on May 11th, I would like you to look at this web site and go to the part that talks about the differences between rocks and minerals. One of the projects that we will be working on later in the unit will be on volcanoes and I would like you to click on the volcano below and this will take you to a volcano webquest with lots of "exploding" information and some fun tasks that will get your brain "flowing" with facts and activities.

Math skills - give them a try!

Good morning boys and girls;
I have been busy getting another lesson on multiplication ready and found this site with math games that will give you lots of practice while having some fun and competing against others. Let me know if you come out first when competing against others........but I know you are all very quick on your multiplication facts!

There are other areas or interest on the site other than math, so feel free to explore if you have some spare time.
Enjoy!

Reading Charlottes Web

In the book Charlottes Web one of the characters is Charlotte the spider. When we looked at homes of animals and had our discussion about things you might see at Halloween, the spider and its web kept being mentioned. In the coming term, we will be looking at habitats of plants and animals and I am sure the spider will be included in our discussion.  I thought it might be helpful for you to find out a bit about spiders and how they buiild their webs so I have attached a link that will give you some further information about spiders.

Earth day - how you can contribute

Earth Day is on Friday April 22. Here is a list of 10 green things you can start on earth day if you are not already doing them. If you are not doing some of these things in your home, maybe you can show your family and encourage them to think"green" and protect our environment.
Enjoy

Did you know?

The Canadian government is planning to get rid of the penny. Other countries like Australia have done away with the penny and rounded to the nearest five or ten. This will mean a lighter load in our pockets when we carry change and our piggy banks will now be stuffed only with silver and gold coins not copper.
